Anhydrous sodium sulfate is white or light yellow, granular crystal or powder, with bitter and salty taste and temperature absorption. Relative density 2.68, melting point 884ºC, soluble in water, the solution is alkaline, insoluble in ethanol.
Anhydrous sodium sulfate is a typical electrostatic bonded ionic sulfate. When barium or lead salts are added to form insoluble sulfates, the presence of free sulfate ions in the solution can be demonstrated: Na2SOChemicalbook4+BaCl2→2NaCl+BaSO4 Sodium sulfate does not react to most oxidants or reducing agents. At high temperatures, it can be converted to sodium sulfide by carbothermal reduction.
