Bromoethane has the properties of a halogenated alkane and can be hydrolyzed to produce ethanol. It reacts with sodium cyanide to produce acetonitrile, and with ammonia, alcohol, and hydrogen sulfide to produce amine, ether, and thiol, respectively. In anhydrous ether, it reacts with magnesium metal to form Grignard reagents. Therefore, bromoethane can be used to synthesize various organic compounds.
